AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Daar is nog nie voorheen 'n wetenskaplike studie oor die politieke loopbaan van Nicolaas Christiaan Havenga onderneem nie. In 1911 het hy op 28 jarige leeftyd 'n lid van die Uitvoerende Komitee van die Vrystaat geword. Sedert 1916 was hy 'n lid van die Volksraad en het mettertyd genl. J. B. M. Hertzog se grootste politieke vertroueling geword. Havenga was die Unie van Suid-Afrika se Minister van Finansies van 1924 tot 1939 en van 1948 tot 1954.
