A review of the literature has revealed contradictions and deficiencies concerning the specific nature and duration of the psychosocial impact of breast cancer and the treatment thereof, as well as of the variables which determine the duration and intensity of this impact. As there has been changes in the past decade in the treatment of breast cancer, the necessity to investigate this influence was indicated. The aims of the present study were to determine: (1) the nature and duration of the psychosocial aspects of breast cancer and its treatment (2) the relationship between adjustment after a diagnosis of breast cancer and specific patient and environmental variables, in order to identify patients at risk for emotional and adjustment problems. The subjects were 45 breast cancer patients from Tygerberg Hospital. They were pre-operatively evaluated and again at three to four and seven to nine months post-operatively. The following variables were measured: psychosocial adjustment with reference to work, social life, marriage and sexual performance (Structured and Scaled Interview to Assess Maladjustment), degree of depression (Beck Depression Scale), state and trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory), feelings of hopelessness and pessimism about the future (Beck Hopelessness Scale), health locus of control (Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales), self-esteem (Index of Self-Esteem), neuroticism versus stability and extraversion versus introversion (Eysenck Personality Inventory), psychiatric symptomatology (General Health Questionnaire), coping strategies (Coping Strategies Scales) and abnormal illness behaviour (Illness Behaviour Questionnaire).
