Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. Introduction: The production of complex mechanical systems often give rise to various problems concerning the process or the product itself. The Rooikat vehicle was used as an example to point out the kind of problems which may occur and what areas need to be addressed in order to eliminate such problems. From this investigation, the critical success factors and the subsequent processes to support these factors, were derived. Development History of the Rooikat: The development cycle of the Rooikat had various shortcomings. The main problem was that because of operational need, the development cycle was shortened and production was started despite the fact that various subsystems of the Rooikat as well as aspects of the production process were not completely qualfied. Quantification of the Problem: Production problems concerning the Rooikat, manifested themselves in mainly three areas, namely high defect rates, long production cycle times and low monthly deliveries. The majority of defects was found at final inspection. The defects on 15 consecutive vehicles were analysed in order to determine the specific areas in which they occured. A total of 478 major defects were found over the 15 vehicles with the majority (17%) attributed to the power packs (engine and gearbox unit). Eighty percent of the defects could be attributed to the power packs, hulls, drive line, fuel system, electrical system, drive mechanisms and wheelstations. Cycle times were analysed by comparing standard times with actual times. It was found that the standard time of the whole process was exceeded by 64 days on avergae for each vehicle. Monthly deliveries were low because of the high defect rates and the long cycle times. Instead of required output of four vehicles per month, the average output was two per month.
