Faculty of Science. Dept. of Applied Mathematics. Mathematical models -- Methodology Learning -- Mathematical models Learning models (Stochastic processes) Dissertations -- Applied mathematics Tesis (M. Sc.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1992. Classic mechanics is an example of an academic area in which problems, after simplifying assumptions have been made, usually have a unique solution, based on the laws of Newton. However, for certain problems, especially in the social sciences, there do not yet exist a clear scientific theory upon which mathematical models can be based uniquely. Consequently a variety of different mathematical models can sometimes be constructed for such problems. Each model elucidates a specific aspect of the problem and there is not necessarily a "best" model. In this study we develop nine different mathematical models for the learning process, specifically avoidance learning. We investigate the methodology of mathematical modelling how the nine models can be compared and how they complement one another. An experiment by Solomon and Wynne conducted on 30 dogs is considered. The relative merits of the various models are determined with the help of data obtained from this experiment. There is also a discussion of various aspects of the underlying assumptions and simplifications.
