It is frequently assumed by educational leaders that beginner teachers have sufficient academic and professional training to enable them to adapt easily to practical teaching. Beginner teachers are immediately exposed to the demands of curricular and extramural programmes for which they are frequently ill-prepared. They therefore experience the transition from teacher training to teaching practice as a reality shock. An empirical study, based on questionnaires and interviews, has attempted to identify limiting factors which may detrimentally influence the teaching ability of beginner teachers. In conjunction with this, orientation programmes aimed at the effective incorporation of beginner teachers in teaching practice have been examined.
