This thesis is an investigation of excavated scarabs that were in circulation during Iron Age I (ca. 1200-1000 B.C.) in Palestine/Transjordan. Included are the results of a pilot-project on a computerized picture database (ICONBASE). The significance of scarabs with regard to Iron Age I lies in the fact that they constitute a primary source of this archaeological period. The value of such a primary source is underlined by the fact that epigraphic information from Iron Age I is virtually nonexistent. Furthermore, the inscriptional and iconographic information provided on the bases of the scarabs gives insight into the cultural and religious situation of Iron Age I in Palestine/Transjordan. Since scarabs were also worn by the ordinary people in the street, this amulet is also a good indicator of the personal piety of the region in this period. The aim of this thesis was to provide as complete as possible a coverage of Iron Age I scarabs from Palestine/Transjordan. 98 Iron Age I sites were selected and examined with regard to scarab finds. However, in order to base the results from scarabs of Iron Age I on solid ground, it is not necessarily a large quantity of scarabs that will achieve such an objective, but a corpus of scarabs that excludes pieces that come from uncertain archaeological contexts.
