Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Reformatories Juvenile delinquents -- Psychology Self-actualization (Psychology) Success Sports Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (MA) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1992. Intensive sports programmes are pursued at schools of industry on the assumption that the achievement of success in sport will act to alleviate the effects of persistent failure, which is characteristic of children committed to such schools. Success is assumed to result in personal growth across a wide range of attributes, including self-concept, personality, motivation, interpersonal relationships and academic achievement. In order to examine the veracity of these assumptions, a sample of 47 pairs of boys, one categorised as being successful in sport and the other as being unsuccessful, were drawn from two schools of industry. The boys were paired using the variables of age, school standard, IQ and home language. They were then evaluated using the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale, HSPQ, PMT, PHSF and examination results. Results were analysed separately, utilising the Hotelling T² technique. Statistically significant, multivariate between-group differences were found on the entire dimensions of self-concept and personality. Significant univariate between-group differences were found for four of the seven Piers-Harris sub-scales, three of the fourteen HSPQ sub-scales, three of the 20 PMT sub-scales, as well as three of the 12 PHSF sub-scales. All differences were in the expected direction, with the members of the success-group appearing to be significantly better adapted. No difference was found in respect of academic achievement. These findings appear to bear out the expectations of the authorities controlling schools of industry, although no causal attributions can be made from the results as the investigation was cross-sectional in design.
