ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The current delimitation of Lachnaea L. and Crytadenia Meis. was investigated. A multidisciplinary approach was followed. This included a study of the habit, the phyllotaxis, the morphology of the leaves, inflorescences and flowers, the anatomy of the leaves and flowers, the pollen morphology and the cytology. No major differences were found between the two genera. The variation range of certain daignostic characters within each genus and between the two genera are such that they merge these genera into each other. It was concluded that the two genera are congeneric and thus the conclusion of Cryptadenia within Lachnaea is proposed. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die huidige generiese afbakening van Lachnaea L. en Cryptadenia Meisn. is ondersoek. Vir die studie is 'n muultidissiplinêre benadering gevolg. Die groeiwyse, baarstand, morfologie van die loofblare, bloeiwyse en blomme, anatomie van die loofblare en blommer, stuifmeelmorfologie en kariologie is bestudeer. Geen noemenswaardige verskille tussen die twee genera is gevind nie. Die variasiegradiënt van diagnostiese kenmerke binne elke genus en tussen die twee genera is van so 'n aard dat die twee genera mekaar oorvleuel. Die insluiting van Cryptadenia binne die omslrywing van die generiese grense van Lachnaea word voorgestel.
