Schools of Industry are schools for the care, education and training of children who have been removed from their parents' care in terms of the Child Care Act (74 of 1983). Children committed to a school of industry often manifest an intellectual backlog, particularly as far as verbal skills are concerned, resultant from educational or cultural deprivation. The aim of this study was to determine whether a change has occurred in the intelligence test scores of adolescent boys and girls committed to schools of industries after a period of two years, as well as whether the verbal/non-verbal discrepancy has decreased. A total of 43 boys and 44 girls who had been tested on the Senior South African Individual Scale (SSAIS) shortly after admission, were retested after a period of approximately two years, using the same intelligence test.
