Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Engineering. Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Computer networks -- Management Expert systems (Computer science) Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Tesis (M. Ing.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1993. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of applying expert systems for the management of computer networks. Special reference is made to the fault diagnosis of computer networks, with the purpose to determine to what extent expert systems could assist in identifying and isolating faults and expediting the repair action. A model is proposed for the processing, interpretation and dissemination of network information by means of an expert system based network management application process. The thesis is presented in five sections. In section I the problems related to network management are defined, the opportunities hypothesized and specific objectives for the thesis defined. It is indicated that computer networks, like many bigger engineering systems, have reached such a level of complexity that new problems, that have not occurred previously, are now being created for maintenance and operations personnel, some which are not yet fully appreciated by all users. To find a solution for these problems, the theory of network management and expert systems are studied in section II, chapters 2 and 3, while the application of expert systems in the industry is studied in chapter 4. A theoretical framework for network management, expert systems and the industrial applications of expert systems are thus created. The theory and concepts are used in section III to develop a structure and model for a expert system based network management application which apply dynamic rule-based fault diagnostic, as well as static expert system concepts for the processing of real-time network information and historic symptoms and causes of faults. Automatic consultation is treated as an extension to the static consultation concept, whereby dynamic network information is extracted in real time from remote network elements for processing by the expert system's inference mechanism. Application of knowledge rules leads to interaction with the external network environment by means of alarm messages, e-mail, speech synthesis, control signals or dialogue with the user. To identify technical and operational problems, the concepts for the proposed model are used in section IV to develop an expert system based network management application using the Turbo Prolog programming language. The study is concluded in section V with a summary and conclusion that proofs the hypothesis that expert systems can effectively be applied for the management of computer networks.
