Dept. of Industrial Engineering. Hypertext systems Manufacturing industries -- Management -- Computer programs Dissertations -- Industrial engineering Thesis (M. Ing.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1993. This thesis reports on the design and development of a hypertext application on World Class Manufacturing (WCM) and Theory of Constraints (TOC). Hypertext is a method of information presentation that provides multiple connected pathways through a body of information, allowing the user to jump easily from one topic to related or supplementary material, which may be in text, graphics, audio, or video format. True hypertext should make the users feel that they can freely move through the information according to their own needs and experience. World Class Manufacturing is the overall umbrella philosophy used to describe organisations striving for excellence. WCM aims at delivering a product, or service, of the required quality to the customer, on time and at a competitive price. WCM covers a wide subject field and consists of various elements. The following are the most prominent elements: Total Quality Management, Total Involvement, Just-In-Time, Theory of Constraints and Total Productive Maintenance. The target audience of the WCM hypertext application was defined to consist of management and students who are interested in the subject fields of WCM and TOC. Hypertext, with its ability of accessing knowledge bases non-sequentially in the multimedia environment, seemed to have potential in presenting the subject fields of WCM. This is because WCM and its various elements all share common concepts and philosophies, but view WCM from different perspectives. This inter-dependence of the elements makes the transfer of know-how in these fields difficult.
