This study investigates the process of world-building in secondary fantasy worlds, with a focus on the world of Gabriëllië, the setting of Carina Stander’s Die Bergengel (2017) and Die Wonderwese (2019). Following the decline of structuralist narratology, the creation and intricate nature of fictional worlds have received relatively little scholarly attention. The primary aim of this research is to identify and analyze genre-specific strategies, conventions, and unique characteristics of fantasy world-building. This aligns with the central research question: what is the nature of world-building in fantasy literature, specifically in the context of Gabriëllië. The study explores whether the nature of a literary work dictates the characteristics and mechanisms used to create its fictional world, and whether "sub-creators" employ different or additional strategies compared to authors of realistic narratives set in the primary world of readers. The role of readers as "co-creators," who bring fantasy worlds to life in their imagination, is examined. The study also addresses religious aspects, social commentary, and allegory evident in the world of Gabriëllië. Findings indicate that societal norms, considered quintessential in the primary world of readers, are validated through the world-building of Gabriëllië. The world-building in Gabriëllië aligns with the conventions of secondary world creation. However, there is a slight deviation from norms when the main character challenges the rigid enforcement of nonviolence under all circumstances. Additionally, a genre convention is exceeded as no grand-scale battles or wars are depicted. This deviation underscores the theme of nonviolence, selfless love, and protection of the weak and oppressed that underpin the world-building. Die doel van hierdie studie is om ondersoek in te stel na hoe wêreldskepping plaasvind in sekondêre fantasiewêrelde. Gabriëllië, die fantasiewêreld, waarin die verhaal van Die Bergengel (2017) en Die Wonderwese (2019) deur Carina Stander, afspeel, is ter toespitsing gebruik. Sedert die greep van strukturalistiese narratologie verslap het, is aan verskeie aspekte van vertelling in literatuur aandag gegee maar die totstandkoming en ingewikkelde aard van verwysing na fiksiewêrelde het betreklik min aandag ontvang. Die hooffokus van hierdie studie is die identifisering en analise van genrespesifieke strategieë, konvensies en unieke kenmerke van die skepping van fantasiewêrelde. Dit reflekteer die sentrale navorsingsvraag wat ondersoek instel na die wyse waarop wêreldskepping in fantasieliteratuur, spesifiek in Gabriëllië, plaasvind. Die vraag of die aard van ’n literêre werk die eienskappe en meganismes waarmee die fiksiewêreld geskep word bepaal, dui op die vraag of “subskeppers” ander, of meer strategieë gebruik om spesifiek sekondêre fantasiewêrelde te skep, as outeurs van realistiese verhale wat in lesers se primêre wêreld afspeel. Die rol van lesers as “medeskeppers” wat fantasiewêrelde in hul verbeelding vergestalt, word uiteengesit. Aandag word gegee aan die religieuse dimensies, sosiale kommentaar en allegorie wat blyk uit Gabriëllië. Bevindings van die studie behels onder meer dat samelewingsnorme wat as ideaal voorgehou word in lesers se primêre wêreld, bevestig word deur die wêreldskepping van Gabriëllie, en dat die skepping van Gabriëllië ooreenstem met konvensies van sekondêre wêreldskepping. Daar is wel bevind dat geringe normdeurbreking plaasvind as die hoofkarakter homself uitspreek teen ’n rigiede toepassing van die norm van geen geweld onder alle omstandighede. ’n Genrekonvensie wat oorskry word, is dat daar geen aanskoulike veldslae of oorloë in Gabriëllië uitgebeeld word nie. Dit hou verband met die lewensbeskouing vanuit Gabriëllië wat as nastrewenswaardig voorgehou word, naamlik dié van niegeweldadigheid en daarmee saam “selflose” liefde en beskerming van swakkeres en onderdruktes.
