| spelling | oai:repository.up.ac.za:2263/109527 The need for the 21st century Reformed tradition to transform towards a womanist turning point Mdingi, Hlulani khusi@tuks.co.za Binca-Mkhesu, Amina Khusi UCTD Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Womanist Ecclesiology Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 21st century Reformed tradition Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2025. The study examined the liberative and oppressive aspects of Reformed traditions in 21st century South Africa. This was achieved through a qualitative womanist analysis of the five solas of the Reformation, namely sola scriptura, sola gratia, solus Christus, sola fide and soli Deo gloria according to Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin. The findings confirmed the shortcomings of Reformed traditions to be the original flaws which are associated with racism, sexism and classism; the universalisation of the Reformers’ interpretations in other parts of the world without contextualisation; and the distortion, suppression and omission of the liberative Reformed teachings. The shortcomings of Reformed traditions demonstrated their need to transform towards a more liberative approach. The womanist approach was identified as adequate to address the shortcomings of 21st century Reformed churches in South Africa due to its comprehensive liberative approach. The womanist recommendations proposed are repentance, ecclesiastical identification with the oppressed, cultivation of the womanist perspective, activism, unity and collaboration, prioritisation of children and youth, as well as enabling transformation at systematic and institutional levels. The study contributes to the development of womanist ecclesiology in 21st century South Africa.
