Dissertation (MCom (Industrial Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2016. Orientation: Student engagement has become an increasingly popular term within the academic field in the last thirty years, and a primary theoretical model for understanding why students drop out of their courses. Personality has been identified as a phenomenon that can indicate why individuals differ and where they would fit in with regard to their vocation choices. Furthermore, it also suggests that personality and vocation interest will play a contributing role to a student’s level of engagement. Research purpose: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between personality, vocational interest and engagement amongst BCom students at a tertiary institution in Gauteng. Motivation for the study: In order for individuals to experience a sense of engagement, it would be necessary for an alignment between the individual’s personality and his/her vocation. Research design, approach and method: The study examined 528 BCom students at a tertiary institution in South Africa by means of a combined purposive and convenient non-probability sampling. The measuring instruments utilised were a biographical questionnaire, the South African Personality Inventory (SAPI); the Oregon Vocational Interest Survey (ORVIS); and the Student Course Engagement Questionnaire (SCEQ). The data were obtained through SPSS and by means of Exploratory Factor Analysis and Multiple Regression Analyses. Main findings: Personality was only partially predictive of vocational interest, where the strongest predictors were Conscientiousness, Intellect/Openness, Social-Relational Negative, and Social-Relational Positive. The second part of the study indicated that personality and vocational interest were only partial indicators of whether a student would experience engagement within his/her chosen field of study. The personality dimensions Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, Intellect/Openness, and the vocational interest dimension Altruism, were the strongest predictors of student engagement. xii Practical/managerial implications: Higher education institutions need to place greater emphasis on engagement. It is a crucial aspect in today’s world, as higher qualifications are becoming more sought after in order to keep up with the constant changing economy. Student engagement not only benefits the students in a personal capacity, but it also leads to the success of higher education institutions. Through the inclusion of active and collaborative learning, institutions can ensure a certain extent of participation in class, interaction with other students, and extra learning outside of the classroom environment. Contribution/value-add: The study will provide a culturally specific contribution to the South African research in the context of personality, vocational interest and student engagement. The instruments that were used to measure vocational interest (ORVIS) and student course engagement (SCEQ) have not been utilised in South Africa before, nor have they been used in conjunction with the South African Personality Inventory (SAPI); therefore, this serves as unique knowledge pertaining to these concepts.
