Dissertation (MCom (Industrial Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2017. Research purpose: The purpose of this study is to address the aforementioned shortcomings in the wellbeing literature by investigating the role of coping in the relationship between fatigue and psychological fitness of blue-collar workers functioning in a South Africa. Research motivation: Despite the growing body of wellbeing literature, there remains a paucity of studies addressing the issue of fatigue among blue-collar workers. Specifically, studies that examine the fatigue, the role of coping, and employee wellbeing are in short supply. Research design, approach and method: The study follows a cross-sectional approach to investigate the effects of fatigue and coping on the wellbeing of bluecollar workers in South Africa. Purposive sampling was employed to recruit South African blue-collar workers. A total of 300 surveys were distributed and 281 surveys were completed. EFA, CFA, SEM and mediation analysis were conducted to determine the mediating effect of coping on the relationship between fatigue and wellness risk. Main findings: The results indicate that positive coping strategies mediate the relationship between fatigue and wellness risk. Moreover, it evident is that there is a strong significant positive relationship between fatigue and behavioural disengagement. Furthermore, there is a positive relationship between behavioural disengagement and wellness risk. However, contrary to the stated hypothesis, there is no significant relationship between fatigue and substance use. Limitations: A couple of limitations were identified in the study. Self-reporting questionnaires were utilised for data collection which may lead to collecting unreliable data. Furthermore, a cross-sectional research design was used that is Acknowledgements based on current circumstances. The literacy levels of some of the target population could lead to respondent error. Finally, limitations were experienced in terms of the data collecting surveys. Future research: For future studies it is recommended that a mixed method approach should be followed whilst conducting a longitudinal study. It is furthermore suggested that a data collecting instrument is designed specifically for blue-collar workers.
