School teachers are often faced with various levels and kinds of stressors. Individuals follow diverse coping strategies to adjust to undesirable and challenging circumstances in an attempt to improve their chances of dealing effectively with the stressors. Teacher resiliency, the capacity to transform according to the situation and to improve capabilities despite adverse situations, is a critical component when confronted with stress. Resilience can be developed to ensure that individuals return to their previous state of functioning. The purpose of this research study was to investigate how different coping strategies affect the relationship between teacher stress and resilience outcomes among school teachers. Measurement models for teacher stress, coping strategies and teacher resilience were developed. Positive and negative coping strategies were found, and these had different effects on positive and negative resilience outcomes. A conceptual mediation model was tested using structural equation modelling. A cross-sectional research design was followed to process responses from the target population of full-time mainstream primary and secondary school teachers in Gauteng, South Africa. The questionnaire consisted of four sections measuring stressors, coping, resilience and demographic variables. An electronic survey was conducted, yielding 371 usable responses. It was found that positive coping strategies mediate the relationship between teacher stress and positive resilience outcomes. Similarly, negative coping strategies mediate the relationship between teacher stress and negative resilience outcomes. Negative coping strategies were highly significant and positively related to negative resilience outcomes, while positive coping strategies were positively related to positive resilience outcomes. Negative coping strategies reduced positive resilience outcomes, while positive coping strategies reduced or cancelled negative resilience outcomes. The findings suggest that organisational interventions aimed at promoting positive coping strategies may be fruitful for improving positive resilience outcomes and reducing negative resilience outcomes.
