The Master of the Unsayable is an examination of Elena Ferrante's use of realism as an authorial technique, and of what 'truth' means and has the potential to mean in a work of fiction. This is done via an investigation of two of her novels, namely, My Brilliant Friend, and The Lying Life of Adults. The perception that Ferrante has the ability to write the 'unsayable' in a way that is not only believable but also masterful goes to the manner in which she writes about facts, metaphorical truths and experiential truths. The thesis examines her employment of recognisably realist techniques as well as her own unique style that pushes the boundaries of realism itself. tRuth is an original manuscript that depicts the lives of three women in post-independent ZImbabwe and then some years later in the wider world. The story explores the idea of truth with particular reference to its relationship to racism, friendship and upbringing.
