Department of Modern Foreign Languages German language -- Thematic learning UCTD German language -- Study and teaching -- Foreign speakers German language -- Teaching material German cultural studies Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2016 ENGLISH ABSTRACT : The thesis investigates the methodological implementation of historical topics within teaching materials for German as a Foreign Language. Firstly the theoretical discussion of the field is presented with special regard to Culture Studies (Landeskunde) and historical Studies in the foreign language classroom. Based on the hypotheses formulated within the introductory chapter the following chapters evaluate the representation of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in four textbooks by different German publishers using the method of Topical Discourse Analysis (Thematische Diskursanalyse). The analysis focusses on nine different aspects: Links to the present (Koreik 2010), encouragement of critical thinking (Chudak 2015), presentation of multiple perspectives (Grabe 2003), reference to contrasting perspectives (Fischer/Fischer 1990), support of cultural learning processes (Altmayer 2004), focus on the interpretive character of history (Meyer 2015), conveyance of historical facts (Kramsch 2015) and links to the demands of the theoretical discussion (Koreik 2010). The thesis comes to the conclusion that the materials use very different approaches to history while most of them promote the GDR in a way that legitimizes its abolition in favour of the current German political system. While the scientific discourse disagrees on the relevance of the different aspects as well as how to implement them there is a consensus that history is conveyed as a construct that is always subject to perspective and interpretation. The analysis however reveals a rather limited impact of these demands on the presentation of historical matters within these textbooks. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING : Hierdie werkstuk ondersoek die metodiese implementering van geskiedkundige onderwerpe in onderwysmateriale vir die vak Duits as ’n Vreemde Taal. Die eerste deel behels ’n teoretiese bespreking, grootliks gebaseer op kultuurstudie (Landeskunde) en die studie van geskiedenis in die klaskamer. Die hipotese verskaf in die inleiding word uitgebrei in die opvolgende hoofstukke deur die voorstelling van die Duitse Demokratiese Republiek (DDR) in vier handboeke deur onderskeidelike uitgewers te evalueer deur gebruik te maak van Tematiese Diskoersanalise (Thematische Diskursanalyse). Die analise fokus op nege verskillende aspekte, naamlik: skakels met die hede (Koreik 2010), die bevordering van kritiese denke (Chudak 2015), die verteenwoordiging van verskeie perspektiewe (Grabe 2003), verwysing tot teenstrydige perspektiewe (Fischer/Fischer 1990), die ondersteuning van kulturele leerprosesse (Altmayer 2004), die fokus op die interpreterende aard van geskiedenis (Meyer 2015), die oordrag van historiese feite (Kramsch 2015) en die skakels tot die vraag na teoretiese bespreking (Koreik 2010). Die tesis kom tot die gevolgtrekking dat die verskeie materiale verskillende benaderings tot geskiedenis gebruik, hoewel die meeste van hulle die DDR op ’n manier uitbeeld wat haar afskaffing en ontbinding, in ruil vir die huidige Duitse politiese sisteem, regverdig. Alhoewel die wetenskaplike diskoers verkillende opinies het oor die belangrikheid en relevansie van die verskillende aspekte en hoe dit implementeer moet word, heers daar konsensus dat geskiedenis altyd ’n element van konstruksie inhou wat altyd van die perspektief waaruit dit vertel en interpreteer word afhang. Die analise openbaar egter ’n beperkte impak van tesisbehoeftes op die aanbieding van historiese sake in hierdie handboeke.
