ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Storytelling connects the past to the present. Since the fall of the apartheid regime in South Africa, there has always been a strive towards restoring the injustices of the past. Generations before us often refer to lived experiences in their youth and adulthood and the struggles they faced in an era unknown to the youth of today. Even though there are many stories about forced removals in South Africa there are not as many about smaller towns and the effect it had on their communities. This research project focuses on the forced removals in Ceres in the 1900s through the gathering of stories from its community. These stories were illustrated into three wordless picture books that bring light and knowledge to the suffering families went through during the forced removals and life thereafter. This study aimed to provide new knowledge, more insight and in some way restore justice to families that went through the suffering of the forced removals by having their and the community’s stories heard. Theoretical perspectives of social justice, inclusion and exclusion, social belonging and narratology was used as guiding theories to this study. The research design was in the form of a case study. Qualitative data collection methods were used to conduct research. Sampling consisted out of interviews with nine participants of the Ceres community and some that lived through the events of the Ceres forced removals in the 1900s.
