ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The interpretation of French romantic organ symphonies on eclectic concert hall organs with a mechanical action requires informed decisions regarding registration and playing technique, with due consideration for the acoustic qualities of the concert hall. The composers of these organ symphonies provided detailed indications in the scores that refer specifically to the unique sound and playing characteristics of the French Cavaillé-Coll organs. These instruments are, however, typically not found in the concert halls where this repertoire is commonly performed. The general tendency with the installation of concert hall organs is to build eclectic organs that accommodate the repertoires of all national and period styles. The literature study reveals a shortage of guidelines for the performance of the French romantic organ symphonies on eclectic organs. The composer indications in the scores refer to the dispositions and designs of Cavaillé-Coll organs and are, therefore, not directly applicable to eclectic organs. A study of the historic development and general features of Cavaillé-Coll organs is conducted to understand their French organ dispositions, sound concepts and ‘mechanical-pneumatic’ playing actions. To fit within the parameters, the study was scoped to include only the French romantic organ symphonies of Félix-Alexandre Guilmant (1837-1911), Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937) and Louis Vierne (1870-1937). The performance indications of these composers generally refer to 3-manual Cavaillé-Coll organs, and for this reason, only 3-manual eclectic organs were considered. Three South African 3-manual eclectic concert hall organs were selected as prototypes for the study. These organs are installed at academic institutions, each of which offers organ tuition, and concerts are hosted on a regular basis. The scores of the organ symphonies contain composer indications for dynamics, articulation, phrasing, character as well as tempo. These indications are scrutinised, as well as the overall multi-movement and individual structures of the various movement types. The objective of guidelines is not to directly imitate the French organ sounds, but rather to render the French Romantic organ style using appropriate and informed playing techniques and registration. Differences between Cavaillé-Coll organs and eclectic organs in the areas of key action and disposition are considered in discussions about touch, articulation, tempo, phrasing and registration. The acoustic qualities of the concert halls that house the eclectic organs are also considered. Organists can apply and adapt the guidelines provided in this study to the characteristics of the specific eclectic organs where the works are performed.
