ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In 2000, Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) was introduced within the subjects of Life Orientation and Life Skills, to ensure that learners do not get confusing and misleading messages on sex, sexuality, gender, and relationships. Life Orientation sexuality education programmes have been viewed as crucial locations for incorporating education to challenge negative assumptions in respect of HIV/AIDS, gender-based violence, and unwanted pregnancy and to promote safer, equitable, and non-violent sexual practices. The research study explored the perspectives and experiences of Life Orientation teachers and the Heads of the Department in the teaching of Comprehensive Sexuality Education. Moreover, it explored how the teaching and learnings of Comprehensive Sexuality Education was influenced by the Scripted Lesson Plans, which were prepared for educators to facilitate their teachings of content specifically related to Sexuality Education in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement. A qualitative research design was used to answer the research questions and achieve the research objectives. To seek a deeper understanding of the research questions, I relied on qualitative interviewing, whereby, semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain rich, detailed answers. Thematic analysis, a powerful as well as a flexible method for analysing qualitative data, was used to understand experiences, thoughts, or behaviours across a data set. The findings indicate that many educators were conflicted about HIV/AIDS and sexuality education, as they perceived it as contradicting their values and beliefs. The overwhelming majority were in support of promoting education regarding HIV/AIDS, teenage pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases but felt personally challenged in teaching about sexuality. The conflict of CSE with local norms and understandings about youth sexuality combined with teacher-parent relationships emerged as problematic in teaching CSE to young learners. The educators use of discretion resulted in insufficient teaching and learning which affects the acquisition of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health knowledge among learners. The research provides crucial information on the teaching of sexuality education in primary school and at the same time points to the need for the professional development of educators.
