Private higher education in South Africa is experiencing changes and challenges never experienced before. Some of these changes and challenges include academics (and other staff) facing reduced autonomy, rising managerialism and strong competition. This study builds a theoretical argument for distributed leadership as an appropriate leadership approach to face these challenges. However, with limited literature on distributed leadership within a South African private higher education context, it is difficult to comment on the current practical use of distributed leadership to face these challenges. Nonetheless, the literature provided enough scope for the study reported here. Therefore, this study addresses this gap in the literature by investigating the current status of distributed leadership within an academic department of a South African private higher education institution. The study was split into two parts to investigate the current status of distributed leadership. First, through a scoping review, it investigated what is currently known about distributed leadership in higher education. Secondly, using a survey, it investigated the extent to which distributed leadership exists in the academic department. The scoping review set the background for the survey and allowed conclusions and comments to be made on the survey results. It was found that distributed leadership has the potential to drive change and promote collaboration within a group. However, a concerted effort is required from the studied academic department to fully realise the potential of distributed leadership. In addition, implementing distributed leadership within an organisation requires financial support and awareness.
