ENGLISH SUMMARY: As a result of the COVID-19 outbreak in China at the end of 2019 and its spread to other countries at the beginning of 2020, numerous organisations were faced with unprecedented challenges. These obstacles compelled companies in South Africa to investigate alternative methods of managing their workforce, in line with President Ramaphosa’s ‘family meeting’ speeches on how the country could pull together to save lives and preserve livelihoods. This had a significant impact on citizens, including both domestic and international community. In the public sector of South Africa, particularly in the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO), there is limited empirical evidence regarding the most appropriate and effective leadership style. We see that new ways of work are emerging around the world. This study’s findings provide evidence of the value of modifying leadership styles in the public sector, specifically at DIRCO. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the leadership style in a case of DIRCO in South Africa. The primary objective was to determine the impact of leadership styles on job satisfaction (JS) and job performance (JP) in the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation. This study used a positivist paradigm quantitative approach, in which the target population of 448 employees at DIRCO were surveyed using an online questionnaire, delivering 281 responses. It was discovered that the laissez-faire leadership (LFL) style is the dominant leadership style, with bureaucratic and democratic leadership styles following closely behind. It was further found that the majority of the employees were near retirement age. The study recommends that an intervention is developed and implemented to ensure that managers find combinations of leadership styles that will ensure that organisational goals are achieved more effectively. To ensure the retention of organisational knowledge, it is recommended that young people are identified and appointed with the aim to ensure future effective organisational operations.
