ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The motivation to study the relationship between performativity and the phasing out of geography in selected North West Province high schools originated from a research gap in qualitative educational research further exacerbated by restricted access to performance trends and learner enrolment statistics. An interest in understanding the phasing out of “killer subjects” as a phenomenon that is being experienced in some schools and factors informing this inspired this interpretive study. The main research question asks: what informs the phasing out of geography in selected high schools in the North West Province? Participants were individually asked 13 questions in online semi-structured interviews, using Seidman’s (2006) three-series interview approach. Their interviews were transcribed for coding and thematic content analysis. Additional data was collected from policies and reports by the Department of Basic Education. Analysis of data was done using the constant comparative analysis method. The research data has identified several factors contributing to performativity and the phasing out of geography in the selected North West Province high schools. These are: challenges in managing the curriculum; Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT), language immersion and performance; contextual factors that impact on learning; the introduction of new school subjects; school geography and the screening of academic potential, as well as the flux of high school geography and cases of performativity. It was found that there was a significant link between performativity and the phasing out of geography. The findings of this study have provided insight on how performance is achieved while underperformance is avoided in the selected high schools of the North West Province. It was further found that schools go through processes of phasing out and phasing in school subjects based on policy changes, resource availability, optimising academic performance and interventions by the education department.
