AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie is die gebruik van die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius Van Loyola as hulpmiddel in die ontwikkeling en/of verdieping van ’n Geintegreerde Missionale Spiritualiteit by predikante in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (NG Kerk) ondersoek. Die navorsingsontwerp van die studie is ’n gevallestudie onder ’n geselekteerde groep predikante van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk van Wes- en Suid-Kaapland. Hoofstuk 1 bied ’n inleiding en agtergrond tot die studie. Daar word ook ’n oorsig gegee van die navorsingsontwerp en -metodologie wat later in Hoofstuk 7 breedvoerig beskryf word. In Hoofstuk 2 word gekyk na wat verstaan word onder die verskynsel van spiritualiteit en hoekom daar in hierdie studie spesifiek van ’n geintegreerde spiritualiteit gepraat word. Daar word veral gewys op die invloed van die modernisme op die verstaan van spiritualiteit en spiritualiteitsvorming, en spesifiek op die tradisionele spiritualiteit en spiritualiteitsvorming van predikante in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk. In Hoofstuk 3 verskuif die klem na die hedendaagse globale teologiese diskoers oor Missionale teologie en hoe dit in die Gereformeerde diskoers – spesifiek in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk in Suid-Afrika – figureer en die verstaan van spiritualiteit beïnvloed. Vanuit hierdie ontwikkeling in die kerk, asook die sogenaamde dualisme van die modernisme en die invloed daarvan op spiritualiteit, word verduidelik waarom daar in hierdie studie van ’n geintegreerde missionale spiritualiteit gepraat word. Hoofstuk 4 staan stil by die vraag oor hoe spiritualiteitsvorming plaasvind, en hoe ’n geintegreerde missionale spiritualiteit by mense gevorm kan word op ’n wyse wat rekening hou met hul Gereformeerde oortuigings. In Hoofstuk 5 word Ignatius van Loyola en sy werk bespreek, spesifiek met verwysing na sy sogenaamde Ignasiaanse Spiritualiteit en die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius. Ignatius van Loyola word histories geplaas in die tyd van die Reformasie en daar word enkele vergelykings getref tussen Ignatius en twee leidende Gereformeerde Kerkvaders, naamlik Luther en Calvyn. In Hoofstuk 6 word die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius verken. Daar word ook gefokus op die dinamika van die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius en op belangrike kenmerke van die Ignasiaanse Spiritualiteit wat Verlange, Geloofsonderskeiding, Verbeeldingsmeditasies, Refleksie en Spiritualiteitsbegeleiding insluit. In Hoofstuk 7 word die navorsingsontwerp en -metodologie verduidelik. Die kwalitatiewe studie neem die vorm aan van ’n sogenaamde praktyk-georienteerde navorsingsprojek. Hoofstuk 8 dek die gevallestudie van elf predikante van die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk van Wes- en Suid-Kaapland se sinode wat die 30-dae Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius in drie retraites van tien dae elk oor 18 maande gedoen het. Tematiese analise en observasie-analise is gebruik om ’n beter begrip te kry van die skuiwe wat in die deelnemers plaasgevind het tydens en na afloop van die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius. Die gevolgtrekkings van die gevallestudie word in Hoofstuk 9 uiteengesit. Daar word gewys in watter mate die Spiritualiteitsoefeninge van Ignatius wel tot ’n meer geintegreerde Missionale Spiritualiteit by predikante bygedra het. Daar is voorstelle van hoe die oefeninge in die toekoms gebruik kan word in die vorming en opleiding van predikante in die Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk. Die hoofstuk bied ook voorstelle vir verdere navorsing. ENGLISH SUMMARY: In this study, the use of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Van Loyola was examined as a tool in the development and/or deepening of a more Integrated Missional Spirituality among ministers in the Dutch Reformed Church. The research design of the study is a case study among a selected group of ministers from the Dutch Reformed Church of the Western and Southern Cape. Chapter 1 offers an introduction and background to the study. An overview is provided of the research design and methodology of the study, which are described in detail in Chapter 7. In Chapter 2, the phenomenon of spirituality is investigated and it is explained why this study specifically refers to integrated spirituality. In particular, the influence of modernism on the understanding of spirituality and spiritual formation is shown, and specifically on the spirituality and spiritual formation of ministers in the Dutch Reformed Church. In Chapter 3, the focus shifts to the contemporary global theological discourse about Missional theology and how this manifests within the Reformed discourse – specifically in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa – and how this impacts our understanding of spirituality. Based on this development in the church as well as the so-called dualism of modernism and its influence on spirituality, it is explained why in this study it was chosen to speak of an integrated missional spirituality. Chapter 4 focuses on how spiritual formation takes place and how an integrated missional spirituality can be formed in people in a way that also takes their Reformed beliefs into account. In Chapter 5, Ignatius of Loyola and his work are discussed, specifically with reference to his so-called Ignatian Spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. Ignatius of Loyola is historically placed in the time of the Reformation and therefore comparisons are made between Ignatius and two prominent Reformed Church Fathers, namely Luther and Calvin. In Chapter 6 the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius are explored. There is also a focus on the dynamics of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius and on key features of Ignatian Spirituality which include Desire, Discernment, Imaginative Gospel Contemplation, Reflection and Spiritual Direction. In Chapter 7, the research design and methodology are explained. This qualitative study was undertaken as a so-called practically oriented research project. In Chapter 8, the case study is presented of 11 ministers from the Dutch Reformed Church of the Western and Southern Cape synod who followed the 30-day Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius during three retreats of 10 days each over a period of 18 months. Thematic analysis and observation analysis were used to gain a better understanding of the shifts that took place in the participants during and after the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius. The case study’s conclusions are outlined in Chapter 9. The extent to which the SpiritualExercises of Ignatius contributed towards a more integrated Missional Spirituality among the ministers is highlighted. Suggestions are provided for the future use of the exercises in the formation and training of clergy in the Dutch Reformed Church. Topics for further research are also suggested.
