Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/c5800be6-2c24-4742-b4b3-8313a631af6d ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Leo Theron's use of abstract forms, color, and light to represent divine presence without creating direct images of the divine places him within a broader international tradition of modernist abstract art. This use of abstraction was adapted by Theron to express spirituality within a Protestant context, and more specifically, an Afrikaans Reformed context. The striking suitability of this international tradition for the aesthetic, theological, and liturgical requirements of modern Afrikaans Reformed churches is explained by examining Protestantism’s deep involvement in the development of modern secular Western thought, aesthetics, and aesthetic experience. Protestant thinkers played a leading role in efforts to address the impact of modernity on traditional spirituality. This process was fundamental to the development of Western modernist abstraction. The tension between modernity and traditional spirituality, which played a central role in Afrikaner identity formation during Theron's formative years, is examined against this broader background to demonstrate how Theron was able to adapt this wider Western tradition to function within the local cultural context. Theron's art is analyzed as a unique local application and exploration of a particularly rich and long-standing international tradition, which gains renewed vitality in his work. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Leo Theron se gebruik van abstrakte vorms, kleur en lig om goddelike teenwoordigheid voor te stel sonder om direkte beelde van die goddelike te skep, plaas hom binne 'n breër internasionale tradisie van modernistiese abstrakte kuns. Hierdie gebruik van abstraksie is deur Theron aangepas om geestelikheid binne ʼn Protestantse konteks, en meer spesifiek ʼn Afrikaanse Gereformeerde konteks, uit te druk. Die verbasende toepaslikheid van hierdie internasionale tradisie vir die estetiese, teologiese en liturgiese vereistes van moderne Afrikaanse Gereformeerde kerke word verduidelik deur die diep betrokkenheid van ProtestanJsme by die ontwikkeling van moderne sekulêre Westerse denke, estetika en estetiese ervaring te ondersoek. Protestantse denkers het ʼn toonaangewende rol gespeel in pogings om die aanslag van moderniteit op tradisionele geestelikheid aan te spreek. Hierdie proses was grondliggend aan die ontwikkeling van Westerse modernistiese abstraksie.
