Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/6632c100-3452-493c-bfc7-3eb2f86e4e73 ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study, Carien Smith's capital, habitus, field and posture in Afrikaans literature is established in comparison with the capital, habitus, field and posture of Jan Rabie. The short story anthologies that are focused on, along with texts in the public domain about both Smith's and Rabie's literary careers, are Smith's Bot (2022) and Rabie's Een-en-twintig (1956). The concepts of capital, habitus and field, as conceived by Pierre Bourdieu contain, several connections and similarities with the posture theory of Jérôme Meizoz. These connections and similarities are discussed in the study with the relevance of their theoretical work for this study in mind. Due to the literary conversation that Smith has with Rabie's Een-en-twintig through Bot, the theory of intertextuality is also used in the study. The concepts and theories mentioned above are used to examine the similarities as well as the differences between the short story anthologies, the authors’ careers and their marketing. These similarities and differences between the anthologies are also examined by looking at the themes, motifs and genres shared by the short stories. The short stories that will be discussed include “Trein”, “Nuwejaar”, “Laemens”, “Fel”, “Liefie”, “June”, “Gesprek met ʼn hologram”, “Vervaag”, “Dit is tyd”, “O2”, “Ek is vir jou gemaak” and “god die Robot” in Bot. These short stories of Smith are discussed in relation to the short stories “Drie kaalkoppe eet tesame”, “Die man met die swaar been”, “Baie”, “La promenade en chien”, “Skelle modder”, “Gesprek onder ʼn donker maan”, “Bloed”, “Die nuwe piramides”, “Voor die muur” and “Ek het jou gemaak” in Rabie’s Een-en-twintig. The first research question that underpins this study is how Smith positions herself within her cultural legacy and how she benefits from Rabie's stature and position in Afrikaans literature. Along with this, it looks at how Smith uses her capital, habitus and field to establish her position in the literary field, as well as how the circumstances differ in the periods when Bot and Een-en-twintig first appeared. The aspects of capital, habitus, field and posture of both authors are also discussed as they stand today. The second research question involves the theory of intertextuality and focusses on how and to what extent Smith uses the short story anthology Een-en-twintig by Rabie as intertext in her own short story anthology. The research design and research methods for this study include the close reading method and a qualitative research method. The close reading method is used to read the selected short story anthologies and draw conclusions regarding the intertextual references from Een-en-twintig in Bot. In the discussion of the research questions, there is concluded that Rabie and Smith's capital, habitus and posture are very different, but at the same time both authors form part of the social field of the arts, as well as part of the subfield of literature. Rabie's position and posture in literature is stronger and better established than that of Smith because of his long career as author and because his work is still examined and used today. Rabie has more social and symbolic capital, but Smith has more cultural capital due to her knowledge of contemporary genres and research areas. It has also been established that the themes and motifs that Rabie uses are also used by Smith herself. There are also similarities between the short story anthologies in terms of content, titles and shared elements. Smith certainly uses Een-en-twintig as creative impetus for her short stories in Bot, although not in all of her short stories. Smith frequently highlights enough elements in Een-en-twintig to draw the conclusion that she finds an intertextual connection with Rabie's stature and position in Afrikaans literature in a sustained manner. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word Carien Smith se kapitaal, habitus, veld en postuur in die Afrikaanse letterkunde ondersoek in vergelyking met die kapitaal, habitus, veld en postuur van Jan Rabie. Die kortverhaalbundels waarop daar gefokus word, tesame met tekste in die openbare domein oor sowel Smith as Rabie se literêre loopbane, is Smith se Bot (2022) en Rabie se Eenen-twintig (1956). Die konsepte van kapitaal, habitus en veld, soos deur Pierre Bourdieu gekonsipieer bevat verskeie raakpunte met die postuurteorie van Jérôme Meizoz. Hierdie raakpunte word in die studie bespreek met die oog op die relevansie van hulle teoretiese werk vir hierdie studie. Vanweë die literêre gesprek wat Smith deur Bot met Rabie se Een-en-twintig voer, word die teorie van intertekstualiteit ook by die studie betrek. Die bogenoemde konsepte en teorieë word benut om die ooreenkomste sowel as verskille tussen die kortverhaalbundels, skrywersloopbane en hulle bemarking te ondersoek. Die ooreenkomste en verskille tussen die bundels word onder andere ook hanteer deur te kyk na die temas, motiewe en genres wat deur die kortverhale gedeel word. Die kortverhale ter bespreking sluit in “Trein”, “Nuwejaar”, “Laemens”, “Fel”, “Liefie”, “June”, “Gesprek met ʼn hologram”, “Vervaag”, “Dit is tyd”, “O2”, “Ek is vir jou gemaak” en “god die Robot” uit Bot. Die eerste navorsingsvraag wat hierdie studie onderlê, is hoe Smith haarself binne die konteks van haar Afrikaanse literêre erfenis posisioneer en hoe sy voordeel trek uit Rabie se statuur en posisie in die Afrikaanse literatuur. Daarmee saam word daar gekyk na hoe Smith haar kapitaal, habitus en veld gebruik om haar posisie in die literêre veld te vestig, asook hoe die omstandighede verskil in die periodes toe Bot en Een-en-twintig verskyn het. Die aspekte van kapitaal, habitus, veld en postuur van beide skrywers word ook bespreek soos dit vandag staan. Die tweede navorsingsvraag betrek die teorie van intertekstualiteit en handel oor hoe en in watter mate Smith die kortverhaalbundel Een-en-twintig van Rabie as interteks in haar eie kortverhaalbundel gebruik. Die navorsingontwerp en navorsingsmetodes vir hierdie studie sluit die stipleesmetode in en die studie is kwalitatief van aard. Die stipleesmetode word betrek om die gekose kortverhaalbundels te lees en om gevolgtrekkings te maak rakende die intertekstuele verwysings uit Een-en-twintig in Bot. In die bespreking van die navorsingsvrae word vasgestel dat Rabie en Smith se kapitaal, habitus en postuur baie verskil, maar terselfdertyd vorm beide skrywers deel van die sosiale veld van die kunste, asook deel van die subveld van die letterkunde. Rabie se posisie en postuur in die letterkunde is sterker en beter gevestig as dié van Smith vanweë sy lang loopbaan as skrywer en omdat sy werk vandag steeds bestudeer word. Rabie besit meer sosiale- en simboliese kapitaal, maar Smith besit meer kulturele kapitaal as gevolg van haar kennis van eietydse genres en navorsingsterreine. Daar is vasgestel dat die temas en motiewe waarmee Rabie werk self ook deur Smith geoperasionaliseer word. Daar is ook ooreenkomste tussen die kortverhaalbundels in terme van inhoud, titels en elemente wat gedeel word. Smith gebruik beslis vir Een-en-twintig as kreatiewe impetus vir haar verhale in Bot, hoewel nie in al haar kortverhale nie. Smith lig gereeld genoeg elemente in Een-en-twintig uit om die gevolgtrekking te maak dat sy op ʼn volgehoue manier intertekstueel aansluiting by Rabie se statuur en posisie in die Afrikaanse letterkunde vind.
