The study employs Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as its theoretical framework. The research examines the interactions between school leadership, teachers, technology and the curriculum within the context of the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). The research design was a qualitative, single case study. In-depth semi-structured interviews and two focus groups were conducted with a total of 24 participants. Data from interviews, focus groups, class observations and an analysis of archival documents were triangulated to define and explore three interconnected CHAT activity systems. These activity systems analyse the relationship between the school leadership and teachers, teachers and technology, and teachers and the digitally mediated curriculum with respect to professional development initiatives and processes. Key findings reveal a dynamic and evolving approach to professional development at the school. The study highlights the school’s journey from structured technical training to collaborative, peer-led professional development. This research demonstrates how strategic implementation of professional development significantly impacts the success of teachers in implementing a digitally mediated curriculum. The study provides insights into tensions and opportunities that teachers face in implementing a digitally mediated curriculum within the context of the CAPS. The research offers insightful perspectives for educational leaders, policymakers and researchers in the field of educational technology and teacher professional development.
