Perspektiewe van belanghebbendes oor die lewensvatbaarheid van digitalisering vir gemeenskapskoerante binne die Boland Media-groep. Unpublished masters thesis. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/bc78e4be-998a-4c23-affb-58cc8ca295c6 Despite community newspapers playing a crucial role in the communities they serve as well as in a variety of other information ecosystems, these types of publications have been struggling with sustainability issues for some time. For many print media, the solution appears to be digitalising and presenting their offerings online. This seems like an effective solution at first glance, but it has many pitfalls that must be considered. For community newspapers to continue fulfilling their given roles in society sustainably, it is therefore necessary to find a viable solution to their sustainability issues. Consequently, this study examines the viability of the digitalisation of community newspapers within the Boland Media group from the perspective of media practitioners from the group. This study aims to determine whether these media practitioners see the digitalisation of their content as a solution to the sustainability challenges they face. To determine this, the roles of a community newspaper are first established. Secondly, the elements identified by media practitioners that affect the media sustainability of their community newspapers, as well as their ability to fulfil their roles sustainably, are considered. Thirdly, the influence of digitalisation on the perceived roles and media sustainability of the community newspapers is investigated, based on the experiences of the media practitioners. The data for this study was collected through semi-structured interviews, after which the interview results were analysed through thematic analysis. During the interviews, the media practitioners highlighted a variety of advantages and disadvantages of digitalisation, along with other issues affecting their ability to fulfil their roles sustainably. Ultimately, it was found that a digital-only format would not be a viable option for these community newspapers at this stage. However, if an adapted version of the current business model were to be developed, a digital-only format could become viable, provided that such a business model supports all necessary aspects and addresses the issues affecting the sustainability of the community newspapers.
