Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Afrikaans & Dutch. Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2025. Van der Merwe, A. I. 2025. ’n Diakroniese korpusondersoek na die voorkoms van laatwerk in die poëtiese oeuvre van Breyten Breytenbach. Unpublished doctoral thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/2c6d0534-4290-43d8-afb9-a9e1a86f7f0c Breyten Breytenbach, one of South Africa’s most iconic writers, has authored a body of work spanning over sixty years of poetry and prose. This study investigates his Afrikaans poetic oeuvre to ascertain whether – and if so, to what extent – the so-called late-style theory (Said, 2006) applies to it. In determining whether Breytenbach’s oeuvre has evolved and/or transformed, and possibly shifted towards late style, style, identity and theme serve as parameters for consideration. Using a corpus-based approach, a diachronic, primarily quantitative study with some qualitative components was carried out. Breytenbach’s work was sorted into four time periods (early poetry, prison poetry, post-prison poetry and late poetry) which were compared to each other. Four subcorpora, one for each period, were created, each one consisting of relevant anthologies: Subcorpus A (Ysterkoei-blues 1964-1975 [2001]); Subcorpus B (Die ongedanste dans: Gevangenisgedigte 1975-1983 [2005]), along with Die singende hand: Versamelde gedigte 1984-2014 [2016], p. 21-80); Subcorpus C (Die singende hand, p. 81-301); and Subcorpus D (Die singende hand, p. 302-726, along with die na-dood (die singende hand se oggendboek-hierinneringe) [2016] and op weg na kû [2019]). The computer programme #LancsBox (Brezina, Weill-Tessier & McEnery, 2021) was used to set up and analyse the corpora. According to Lourens (2017: 80), there are four types of late style, each with its respective characteristics: (1) serenity, acceptance and transfiguration; (2) fragmentation, exile and insufficient coherence; (3) resurrection; and (4) humanitarianism, coherence, freedom, transformation and transcendence. Regarding the style parameter, it was established that the second and fourth types of late style do apply, whereas the first and fourth kinds feature prominently in the identity parameter. However, I postulate a fifth kind of late style based on the impact of incarceration on Breytenbach’s creative writing and the concurrent trauma having accelerated late-style phenomena in his writing. Regarding the theme parameter, to which my proposed fifth type applies, indications of the second and fourth types of late style were indeed found. Future studies can examine this identified fifth type of late style in the work of other writers who have been similarly traumatised. Limitations of the present study did not allow every possibility, leaving room for future research into corpus findings of Breytenbach’s work; the corpus methodology can also be applied to other writers.
