Over the last couple of decades, the field has seen a drastic shift in perspective, moving away from the disease-ease continuum, towards understanding health as a unipolar construct and that the mechanisms underlying mental health are significant. This thesis aims to contribute to this field by exploring sense of coherence as a psychological mechanism underlying positive spirals of behaviour that drive people toward the upper end of the health continuum, beyond coping toward flourishing. This exploratory study examines various conceptual models in a multiple regression environment. The exploratory models are designed to explore sense of coherence as a construct from an interactionist and situational perspective. This is an unconventional view of the sense of coherence construct and the objective of this study is to contribute to a broadened theoretical perspective of the construct that would inspire future research in this direction. The theoretical background which lead to this exploration of sense of coherence is given followed by conceptual model and hypotheses creation to evaluate the relationships among situational sense of coherence, work sense of coherence, proactive coping, and proactive personality in a sample of 54 South African employees in a hybrid-work setup.. The findings demonstrate that the hypothesised main effects between the constructs proactive personality, proactive coping, situational sense of coherence, and work sense of coherence are supported, but due to sample size and statistical power limitations, mediation and moderation effects were not supported. The study is limited to non-experimental, online survey research using instruments in the public domain. Ethical clearance to conduct the study was obtained from the Stellenbosch University Ethics Committee. Recommendations for future research include the development of a behavioural indicator scale for sense of coherence.
