Liturgiese Orrelmusiek deur Suid-Afrikaanse Komponiste as Aanvullende Pedagogiese Materiaal in die Elementêre Fase van Orrelonderrig. Unpublished doctoral dissertation. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/e17a0938-6696-4950-ad39-f70384262f64 Beginner organ students, like learners of other instruments, demonstrate increased motivation when engaging with repertoire that is culturally relevant and musically meaningful. Research, as well as empirical observation by practising instrumental teachers, confirms the role of cultural relevance in the learning process and its positive influence on learner engagement and intrinsic motivation. Although international beginners’ methods provide an essential foundation for technique and stylistic awareness, the repertoire they contain seldom reflects the liturgical and cultural frame of reference of South African organ students. Liturgical music, however, offers a distinct opportunity to enhance this relevance and familiarity in early organ instruction. This study investigates the pedagogical potential of liturgical compositions by South African composers as supplementary repertoire for the elementary stages of organ teaching. An analytical framework, grounded in the core requirements of elementary organ technique and the approaches found in existing instructional methods, was developed to systematically evaluate the suitability of selected works. From published South African collections of liturgical music since 1972, twenty-four compositions were identified and analysed with regard to their technical demands, stylistic characteristics, and pedagogical usefulness. The study finds that these works - characterised by accessible textures, stylistic clarity, and liturgical familiarity - offer meaningful pedagogical opportunities and can add significant value to organ instruction at the elementary level. The study therefore contributes to the field of organ pedagogy by highlighting the relevance of South African liturgical music in beginner training and by providing concrete recommendations for the integration of these and similar compositions into existing programmes for early organ instruction, as presented in current beginner methods.
