Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/9ff81815-96b6-45ba-92ca-f17cfa952d7b This mini-thesis studies the development of an alternative world and therefore an alternative ontology for the so-called Antropocene in Flemish poet Dominique De Groen’s Sticky Drama (2019). Sticky Drama portrays the narrative of an unidentified lyrical speaker, situated in a futuristic, post-apocalyptic world where the boundaries between the human and nonhuman, and the living and nonliving are blurred. The concept of the Anthropocene as a geological epoch implies that the actions of man have a bigger impact on the earth’s system than other forces at play in the system. Several ecocritics agree that the anthropocentric perspective of the Age of Enlightenment and the resultant humanist worldview is the root cause of climate issues of the current age, such as global warming, natural disasters and pollution. As a response to the humanist framework, posthumanist theoretical discourse developed in the 1970s from feminist theories that take a critical stand against Enlightenment-based humanism. The posthumanist framework’s main aim is to shift the notion of “man” or antropos from the centre of Western thinking and to blur or erase the dualistic boundaries that differentiate between human and nonhuman, culture and nature, as well as living and nonliving. The focus of this investigation is on the theoretical field of posthumanism and certain branches of new materialism and material ecocriticism, specifically referencing Tracy Ailamo’s transcorporeality and Donna Haraway’s speculative fabulation and the cyborg, along with the narrative and agential abilities of matter as seen from within the material ecocritical lens. Read through a new materialist lens, this mini-thesis traces the development of Sticky Drama as a posthumanist text that reimagines an alternative ontology for the Anthropocene.
