Unpublished masters thesis. Stellenbosch: Stellenbosch University [online]. Available: https://scholar.sun.ac.za/items/2ab45597-59ad-4e9a-aaaa-c8143e21aabc This study is centred on the object correlate as a poetic technique as well as the ethics of writing about the Other in three Afrikaans poetry collections: DJ Opperman’s Komas uit ʼn bamboesstok (1979), Antjie Krog’s Lady Anne (1989) and Jolyn Phillips’s bientang (2020). The theoretical framework firstly includes New Criticism, especially the concept of “the object correlate” as initially established by TS Eliot, as well as Martinus Nijhoff’s and DJ Opperman’s reactions to and expansion of the concept. Secondly, it draws on the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and his work on the ethics of the Other, with specific reference to the radical unknowability of the Other, the face of the Other, and the ethical responsibility of the self towards the Other. The object correlate is used as a tool to conduct analyses of poems in the three collections. The purpose of this is to gain insight into the nature of the relationship between the various poetic speakers and the historical figures with whom each identifies. These three analyses are then compared with each other through the lens of Levinas’s ethics of the Other and conclusions are drawn about the ethical implications of writing about an Other in each of the three volumes.
