Van der Merwe, S. W. J. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Science. Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science. Explosives -- Analysis Polymers Dissertations -- Chemistry Thesis (MSc) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1990. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A range of fourteen pressable, polymer-bonded explosives <PBX's) were evaluated for application in a missile warhead. HMX (cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine) was identified as the most suitable high explosive component for the PBX, while different polymers in concentrations of between 3% and 10% (m/m) were used as binders throughout the investigation. Two types of fluoropolymers, a polyurethane, polystyrene and two block-polymers were investigated as binders. Critical requirements for the above-mentioned application were identified, and the PBX fqrmulations were tested against these criteria. These include physical, chemical, thermal, stability and performance characteristics, as well as relevant aspects relating to the processing of the PBX (manufa.cture and pressing). The response of the PBX with regard to the selected test stimuli were obtained, and consequently HXCX 9501 (95% bimodal HMX plus 5% styrenebutadiene- styrene binder) was identified as the most suitable candidate for the application. Twee fluoropolimere, 'n poli-uretaan, polistireen en twee blokpolimere is as sodanige binders ondersoek.
