Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work. Social work with teenagers Adolescence Dissertations -- Social work Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. An exploratory study was undertaken in the higher socio-economic community of Durbanville to determine the incidence of adolescent problems, including emotional and behavioural problems. The preliminary investigation included interviews with professional persons in the community, a survey at three schools and a literature study. This investigation revealed that adolescence is a happy, normal period for most indivuduals, but that it could lead to problems owing to the complex developmental tasks which have to be mastered. A comprehensive literature study included all the facets of normal adolescent development, as well as the handling of stress and risk behaviour among adolescents, two affective disorders, namely depression and anxiety disorders, and three types of behaviour disorders. It was decided to conduct a survey in school context among high school pupils. The Education authorities concerned were approached and their permission and cooperation obtained. Two age groups, namely grade 9 pupils and grade 11 pupils who were representative of early and middle adolescence respectively, were involved. By means of stratified random selection, a sample of 463 pupils from the three high schools in the community was chosen to participate in the survey. The measuring instrument used was a combination of two self-report questionnaires, namely the Psychosocial Functioning Inventory for High-school Children (PFI-HC), which measured respondents' functioning in eighteen areas, and a behaviour questionnaire which examined the incidence of various types of problem behaviour and which was compiled by the researcher. The questionnaires complemented each other. The results show that the research group as a whole functioned well, and there was no significant difference in the number of problems identified in this group and the number found in normal adolescent populations. The scores on the respective subscales of the PFI-HC are indicative of a group of teenagers who are happy with themselves and their lives, who function satisfactorily emotionally and maintain positive interpersonal relationships. The results of the questionnaire on behaviour revealed that all the types of problem behaviour had occurred in the sample in the preceeding twelve months and that the pupils experimented widely with various types of problem behaviour such as truancy, dishonesty in tests/examinations and shoplifting. Although this behaviour is reprehensible, it fits in with normal exploratory adolescent behaviour. The incidence of recurring problem behaviour or truly dangerous or criminal types of problem behaviour was limited to such a small number of respondents that it cannot be regarded as characteristic of the research group.A number of problem areas pertaining to significant groups of respondents were identified. High scores on the PFI-HC indicated that groups of 13% to 18% of the respondents could be experiencing frustration and anxiety to a serious degree, have o low self-image and feel stigmatised. A very negative attitude towards school and sqhool-work, as well as towards their families, was found in groups of respondents. The behaviour questionnaire showed that the extent of substance abuse, including alcohol abuse, binge drinking, and dagga abuse, has reached alarming proportions. The recommendations include further research, a concerted effort by the schools and the community to offer assistance to those adolescents who are experiencing emotional and social distress, to present programmes in and outside the context of the school to improve the life skills of pupils and combat substance abuse, and to determine the possible causes of the negative attitude of pupils towards school and schobl-work.
