Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Social Work. Military social work Social workers -- Supervision of Dissertations -- Social work Thesis (M.A.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. In this study, the contribution of supervision to the development of occupational motivation of military social workers was examined. To achieve this, a literature study was undertaken covering occupational motivation, military social work and supervision (including management). Thereafter an empirical study was undertaken by way of a questionnaire which was distributed to the respondents' work addressess. The research confirmed that supervision was one of the management functions that needed to be executed in an organisation and that it fulfills a management, training and support role. From the findings, it would appear that the majority of military social workers are motivated and enthusiastic about their work. The conclusion can thus be drawn, that the comprehensive supervision which the workers receive,a s found in the study, contributes to their level of occupational motivation. The study indicated that the most important aspects which can promote occupational motivation are opportunities for performance, promotion, personal development and growth. Improved compensation was also viewed as being very important and definitely contributed to occupational motivation. The conclusion was made that military social workers are not given sufficient opportunity to specialise in their field of interest, and that they do not receive enough recognition and encouragement from their supervisors and management. An aspect which has the greatest influence on military social worker's occupational motivation, was the current rationalisation of the SANDF and the uncertainty associated with it. With nor respect to supervision, it was significant that the majority of the respondents indicated that supervision definitely contributed to their job satisfaction. From the findings, it would seem that there was a clear correlation between the respondents who received supervision and the respondents who indicated that they were strongly motivated in terms of the occupation. It was evident that supervision has the potential to increase the occupational motivation of military social workers, but that supervisors do not always implement the training and administrative functions of supervision correctly, in accordance with the theory. Recommendations whereby training institutions, management and supervisors can improve the occupational motivation of military social workers, were made. Possible areas of further research were also indicated.
