The last part of the twentieth century continues to see advances in the field of electronics. New instruments, such as the electronic keyboard and the digital piano offer new opportunities and challenges to music education including group keyboard tuition. In South Africa, however, neither has the potential of group keyboard tuition been exploited to the full nor on the whole have the curricula for such tuition been planned on a principled basis. The primary aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of group keyboard tuition as a method of instruction (i) that aims at developing a variety of skills and knowledge, and (ii) that is musically and educationally justified in relation to the learners developmental phase (here, six-to-ten-year olds).
