Ed.) -- University of Stellenbosch, 1998. Parental involvement in the promotion of learning is receiving increasing recognition world-wide as an important factor in optimising children’s progress in all aspects of learning. This is largely a result of research in this area as well as the demands of parents to be involved. Parental participation can be influenced by parents, teachers and students. It usually involves grass-roots, low cost programmes and strategies that are acknowledged to have positive effects on multiple domains, for example, on parent attitudes and behaviours, quality of parent-school and parent-teacher relations and student academic performance. While it is true that parents are the greatest resource for education in South Africa and yet remain under-utilised, it must however, not be forgotten that the recent turmoil in education has had a profoundly negative effect on parent-school relations. During the struggle, parental involvement in education was relegated to the periphery while the fight for liberation was accorded priority status. While the struggle continued to challenge apartheid and partly contributed to its demise, it was less successful in resolving the crisis in education, which continues to plague us. In fact, the struggle contributed significantly to the marginalization of parents from participating actively in the promotion of a disciplined culture of learning. However, the promulgation of the South African Schools Act no. 84 of 1996, has presented parents with tremendous challenges and opportunities to become active partners in the promotion of a sustained and positive culture of learning. This thesis represents an attempt by the researcher to highlight the importance of parents as primary educators of their children. Furthermore, it also provides basic practical guidelines for parental involvement in the promotion of quality education. In addition, the historical perspective in chapter two is an attempt to present a glimpse into the troubled educational past so that the present can be understood in context and appropriate educational strategies for increased parental empowerment in education, can be devised. More specifically, the thesis calls for a united front for building a community of learners through concerted effort, determined collaboration and an ongoing commitment and discipline amongst parents, teachers, pupils, the community, teacher unions and other stakeholders such as government and business. It is the researcher’s belief that the programmes, strategies and recommendations presented in chapter four and five respectively, will be of value to all role players, as the quest for excellence in education continues.
