ENGLISH SUMMARY: The choice of and motivation for the study is to determine which factors have a demotivational effect on social workers employed by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Practical experience indicates that these social workers display a general attitude of being demotivated. It is of critical importance that members from this unit should be motivated and enthusiastic, enabling them to be of optimal service to the personnel of the SAPS. As part of this study emphasis has been placed on literature concerning motivation and theories of motivation, as well as factors which have a demotivational effect on employees, in particular members of the helping professions. These stressors, as identified, are subsequently linked to occupational social workers who are employed by the SAPS. The aim of the empirical study is to determine which factors de motivate these social workers. The data and accompanying results, as gathered from the empirical study, clearly indicates that specific de motivators are present among the social workers. The identified de motivators confirm data as discussed in the chapters which contain the literature study. The suggestion emanating from the results of the research is that the management component of Social Work Services: SAPS should, as a matter of urgency, initiate a proactive as well as a reactive strategy on the basis of the data presented. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die keuse en motivering van die studie is om ondersoek in te stel na faktore wat 'n demotiverende invloed op die maatskaplike werker verbonde aan die SuidAfrikaanse Polisie (SAPO) tot gevolg het. Praktykervaring het: onder meer getoon dat daar in die algemeen In gevoel wat dui op gedemotiveerdheid, by die betrokke maatskaplike werkers bestaan. Oit is van kritieke belang dat diegene werksaam in hierdie eenheid op 'n gemotiveerde en entoesiastiese wyse sal funksioneer ten einde hulle klientsisteem, naamlik die personeel van die SAPD, optimaal van diens te wees. Tydens hierdie studie is daar gefokus op literatuur wat met motivering en motiveringsteoriee verband hou, sowel as faktore wat 'n demotiverende uitwerking op werknemers, in besonder werknemers verbonde aan hulpprofessies kan he. Hierdie geidentifiseerde stressors is vervolgens met die bedryfsmaatskaplike werkers verbonde aan die SAPD in verband gebring. Met die empiriese ondersoek is bepaal watter faktore die maatskaplike werkers binne die SAPD demotivleer. Ingesamelde data en gepaardgaande resultate, soos vanuit die empiriese ondersoek bekom, dui daarop dat daar spesifieke demotiveerders by maatskaplike werkers in die SAPD teenwoordig is. Die geidentifiseerde demotiveerders bevestig data soos in die literatuurstudie vervat. Voortvloeiend vanuit die navorsingsresultate word aanbeveel dat die bestuurskader van Maatskaplikewerkdienste: SAPD dringend aandag aan die formulering van 'n proaktiewe sowel as 'n reaktiewe strategie op grond van die verkree resultate gee.
