This study was undertaken to show that the integration of thinking skills into the second language curriculum will enhance the communicative teaching of English as a second language at Senior Secondary level. A secondary goal of the study was to enhance the quality of learners’ thinking and simultaneously enrich their learning experience. The research was preceded by a study of the literature regarding the concepts of thinking, cognition, metacognition, knowledge and intelligence. It is necessary to distinguish between these concepts to understand their role in integrating thinking skills with the teaching of English as a second language. The data was gathered using qualitative research methods, which allowed the researcher to obtain a wide range of responses. The pilot group for this project was the Grade Ten learners from a school in a semi-rural area. It was decided to involve schools from three different demographic areas of the Western Province for the Grade Eleven Group, i.e. a rural, semi-rural and suburban school. Three educators and 135 learners formed part of the Grade Ten group, while five educators and 129 learners participated in the Grade Eleven project. Thinking tools used in this project were selected from De Bono’s CoRT Programme which contains a wide range of options. The Western Cape Education Department favours a communicative teaching approach to the teaching of English as a second language. The communicative approach to language and De Bono’s CoRT thinking tools form the basis of the lessons devised for this project. The lessons were divided into three modules. In Modules 1 and 2, six thinking tools were presented to the learners. In Module 3, three lessons were devised to use all or most of the tools in the set situations. The tools that were presented to the learners were CAF (Consider All Factors), OPV (Other People’s Views), C&S (Consequences and Sequels), PNI (Positive, Negative and Interesting), AGO (Aims, Goals, Objectives) and FIP (First Important Priorities). The project successfully undertook to investigate the effectiveness of fusing thinking skills with the communicative approach to teaching English as a second language. From the results achieved, it would appear that a fusion of thinking skills with English second language teaching achieves a dual purpose, viz. the facilitation of English second language acquisition, as well as a measure of cognitive enrichment.
