Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of Psychology. Identity (Philosophical concept) Vocational guidance Dissertations -- Psychology Thesis (MA) -- Stellenbosch University, 1995. This study examined the correlation between vocational identity, fear of commitment and career indecision. Several researchers (Grites, 1981; Titley & Titley, 1980) view career indecision as a normal part of the developmental processes during adolescence, while others (Hartman & Fuqua, 1983) view it as an indication of possible psychological distress. Ninety-eight under-graduate university students served as research participants and completed the Career Decision Scale (CDS), the Vocational Identity Scale (VIS) and the Fear of Commitment Questionnaire (FOCQ). The results indicated that the scores on the CDS were significantly related (p ≤ 0.05) to the scores on the VIS and the FOCQ. Support was obtained for the important role of the construct of identity in the explanation of career indecisiveness. The findings also indicated that only one biographical variable, namely gender had a significant influence on fear of commitment. Career indecision can be regarded as a more complex phenomenon than that experienced during a normal developmental process. The danger exists of career indecision being addressed solely through the application of exploration techniques, whereas an underlying identity diffusion requires different treatment strategies.
