Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Dept. of History. Due to the unfamiliarity with the research phenomenon Nicholas of Cusa in the South African context and because of specific internal problems and complexities which a study of Cusanus pose, this study launches a voyage of discovery to the historical phenomenon Nicholas of Cusa. The voyage is steered by the compass of being in search for the unity of unity and diversity. It aims to establish the historical and contextual dimensions in which Nicholas should be understood. This study thereby intends to form a basis on which a further interpretation of the unity of unity and diversity could possibly take place. Before Nicholas of Cusa can be "discovered" however, a historically legitimate way of discovery should be determined. This takes place through a critical reflexion on historical research, where various historical presuppositions are measured by the extent to which they portray the "unity and diversity of Now and Then". This reflection focusses on the terminological and conceptual problems regarding the so-called Middle Ages and identifies certain dangers they could pose for a historical voyage of discovery. It concludes that the creation and maintenance of historical distance as opposed to immediate identification and actualised utilization could make possible a historical legitimate discovery and account of the historical phenomenon "Nioholas of Cusa". Thus follows the exploration of the historical context in which Nicholas lived and thought. This exploration is also directed by the "unity-compass" and accordingly, "discord" is dialectically chosen as a key to open up a historical understanding of the historical developments that culminate in the 15th century. In the next phase of the journey the philosophical-theological texts of Nicholas are explored in their emergence from his life-context and the contents are partly analised to provide an overview of his search for an understanding of unity, but without obscuring the rich diversity of different topics in his thought. It shows that the Cusanic thought on unity was stimulated and led by various crucial developments in his practical life and that the diversity of his thought is to be understood in a unity, precisely because the diversity of themes and subject matter to be found in his works, has the goal of expressing this unity in a variety of ways. Finally, a number of directing principles are determined which could govern a further understanding of the Cusanic unity of unity and diversity. It shows that the historical coming into existence of his works from the context of his practical life will play a pivotal role in interpreting these texts. It further shows that the development of the Cusanic thought took place through a continued and renewed search for a higher understanding of, and a more adequate expression of the unexpressable unity. Thus his thought resulted in a vast variety of key concepts. The research of these individual concepts and their unity in their continued development will play an essential role in a consequent interpretation of the Cusanic unity of unity and diversity.
