In order to give a description of the lived experiences of the terminally ill patient this study is conducted within an existential-phenomenological perspective. The main aim of this thesis is to give a description of the phenomenon of the dying process. Since research on the experiences of the dying involves intense personal involvement between the patient and the researcher, the existential-psychological experiences of the patients and the researcher will be investigated heuristically. Literature concerning death and dying is discussed, with the focus on the emotional responses of the terminally ill patient, as well as certain existential themes concerning death and dying. The research component of the thesis is comprised of a phenomenological study of verbal descriptions of the experiences of two male and two female subjects. Descriptions are analysed using the Duquesne phenomenological method.
