The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of plastic mulches and row covers on the micro-climate, crop development and yield of cucurbits. Two trials were conducted, one of which a field trial and the other a glass-house trial. Air and soil temperatures may be increases with the use of row covers and mulches but excessive build-up of air temperatures underneath the row covers is possible. When used with a row covered black mulch resulted in a higher air temperature but it gave rise to the lowest soil temperature. The highest soil temperature was measured under a transparent mulch. Early plantings benefited more from the use of row covers and mulches. It was expected that radiation would be restricted more effectively at night by infra red inhibiting than regular plastic mulches. This was not the case, however, and no differences in the morning soil and air temperatures were observed. The morning air temperature underneath the row covers also did not differ from that of the ambient morning air temperature. Relative humidity (RH) underneath the row covers did not decrease during the course of the day. The RH measured underneath the row covers at 06h00 did not differ from the ambient RH. The 14h00 RH of the various row covers did not differ, but was approximately 35% higher than the ambient RH. As climatic variable the afternoon RH counted for 25% of the yield variations achieved with watermelon. None of the other climatic factors made a significant contribution to yield variation.
