H. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of AgriSciences. Dept. of Soil Science. Vineyards Soil chemistry Soils, Salts in Irrigation -- Environmental aspects Grapes -- Irrigation Dissertations -- Agriculture Tesis (M. Sc. Agric.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1995. A research project spanning five years was started in 1991, the purpose of which was to determine to what extent the use of saline water would influence the yield of a vineyard. The vineyard was irrigated with six applications of saline water, the conductivity of which varied between 30 mS/m and 500 mS/m. The irrigation water was salinated with a 1∶1 (mole) mixture of NaCl and CaCl2. However, at the end of the summer irrigation season a large spatial variation in salinity was noted, especially regarding the in situ samples of soil water, among plots which received the same treatment. In order to attempt explaining the spatial differences, the following factors were investigated: a) the particle size distribution at the different plots and at different depths; b) the in situ fieldwater capacities; c) the effect of the sample position in the irrigated area; d) the quantity of irrigation water and the salinity of the water which each plot received. Leaching fractions as well as evapotranspiration was obtained for each plot by computing water balance in depth units as well as in volume units. Leaching fractions were also computed by means of salt balances. The conclusion is that none of the observations which were made or the factors which were investigated, could explain the spatial variation in salinity sufficiently, except the variation due to the position where the soil samples were taken. The temporal variations in the soil-chemical composition were investigated by: firstly ascertaining the changes in chemical composition of the soil by determining the seasonal changes in the electrical conductivity of the saturated extract (ECe) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) of the soil profile. Secondly, the seasonal changes in the electrical conductivity of the soil water (ECsw) were determined. Thirdly, the correlation between the SAR and the exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) were determined. The ECe and SAR of treatments 4 to 6 are of the same order due to the possible precipitation of CaCO3. For each of the treatments the ECsw increased as the season went by, till it reached a equilibrium by the beginning of December. An empirical relationship between the SAR and the experimentally determined ESP was obtained, with a correlation coefficient of 0.63.
