The response patterns of adolescents and their parents on the different subscales of the Family Environment Scale have been compared to determine whether they perceive their real family climate differently. The research was limited to white Afrikaans speaking families in a rural environment. All adolescents were pupils of a specific high school and were not hostel-residents, in order to exclude certain influences. To ensure reliable responses adolescents with average to above average cognitive ability and whose achievements were in accordance with their abilities, were used. A Biographical Questionnaire was completed by both parents to ensure that both biological parents were involved in the research and that it was both parents’ first marriage. The results have shown that generally there was no notable difference between the response patterns of adolescents and their parents on the different subscales of the FES. However, some significant differences were found in the response patterns of mothers and adolescents on the cohesion expression and conflict subscales. The response patterns of fathers and adolescents also showed a significant difference on the conflict subscale. The effects that the ages of parents and adolescents, the length of parents’ married life, their level of training and the size of the family had on perception of real family climate was also investigated. The age of mothers significantly influenced their responses on the intellectual-cultural-orientation subscale of the FES. The ages of adolescents were significantly related to their responses on the independence subscale of the FES. Considering the above mentioned results, the main research hypothesis could therefore not be rejected. The differences were not notable and can be seen in a positive light due to the possible mutual bondage within family structures.
