spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/55070 Die invloed van stikstofbemesting volgens reenval op groei, opbrengs en stikstofbenutting van lentekoring in die Swartland Du Plessis, Charl Petrus Agenbag, G. A. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of AgriSciences. Dept. of Agricultural Economics. Wheat -- Fertilizers -- South Africa -- Swartland Crops and nitrogen Nitrogen fertilizers -- South Africa -- Swartland Wheat -- Fertilizers -- South Africa -- Western Cape Dissertations -- Agriculture Tesis (M. Sc. Agric.) -- Universiteit van Stellenbosch, 1996. The influence of N-fertilisation was studied on growth, yield and nitrogen utilisation in the district of Porterville. Both application time and rate of nitrogen were studied with treatments where 0, 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha⁻¹ were applied at sowing and treatments where 60 kg N ha⁻¹ at sowing was followed by top dressings of 20, 30 and 45 kg N ha⁻¹ at Gs.10–12 and Gs.14–15. Top dressing treatments consisted of a standard application of 20 kg N ha⁻¹ and treatments where applications varied according to rainfall from sowing to Gs.10–12 and from sowing to Gs.14–15. Yield response differed between treatments in 1992 and 1993. In general, the highest yields were reached with applications of more than 100 kg N ha⁻¹ regardless of time of application. During 1992 yield determining factors, kernels ear⁻¹ and kernels m⁻² increased with increased nitrogen applications. Kernels ear⁻¹ also increased with increased top dressings at Gs.10–12 during 1992 and 1993. The development of leaf area, vegetative material, N percentage and N content of vegetative material was increased by nitrogen applications of more than 100 kg N ha⁻¹. Top dressing according to rainfall at Gs.10–12 also increased leaf area, leaf mass and nitrogen percentage in the leaves and stems. Stem mass and total plant mass benefit the most by nitrogen applications at sowing. Percentage nitrogen recovery by grain yield was very low and decreased with increased nitrogen application rates at sowing. Nitrogen recovery increased when top dressings at Gs.10–12 were compared with nitrogen application at sowing, but recovery by grain yield was not as high as for vegetative material. Margins after nitrogen fertilisation increased with increasing nitrogen applications and indicate that a rate of 97 kg N ha⁻¹ applied as 60 kg N ha⁻¹ at sowing time, followed by a top dressing of 37 kg N ha⁻¹ (according to rainfall) at Gs.14–15 resulted in the same margin as 150 kg N ha⁻¹ applied at seeding during 1992. When 105 kg N ha⁻¹ was applied as 60 kg N ha⁻¹ at sowing, followed by a top dressing of 45 kg N ha⁻¹ (according to rainfall) at Gs.10–12 a margin of R205 ha⁻¹ more was obtained when compared with 150 kg N ha⁻¹ applied with sowing during 1993. It is clear that the efficiency of nitrogen fertilisation can be improved by management according to rainfall. As this will improve the profit margins of wheat production, it surely needs further investigation.
