ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Die Stoetmeester displays many characteristics of the traditional farm novel which played a very important role in the development of prose in Afrikaans. Traditional farm novels describe traditional farming methods, picture and idyllic reality and have a chronological structure. The father figure dominates and traditions are very important in the lives of the characters. These traditional characteristics are rejuvenated in the "new" farm novel. AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die Stoetmeester toon talle kenmerke van die traditionele plaasroman wat so 'n belangrike rol gespeel het in die ontwikkeling van die Afrikaanse prosa. Tradisionele plaasromans beskryf traditionele boerderyaktiwiteite, beeld 'n idilliese werklikheid uit en het 'n chronologiese bou. Die vaderfiguur domineer en tradisies is beangrik in die lewe van die karakters. Hierdie traditionele kenmerke word egter vernuwe in die nuwer plaasroman.
