spelling oai:scholar.sun.ac.za:10019.1/55102 Die verhouding woord, gees en geloof volgens Helmut Thielicke : 'n kritiese beskouing van sy soteriologie Cilliers, Willem Jacobus Theron, P. F. Stellenbosch University. Faculty of Theology. Dept. of Systematic Theology and Ecclesiology. Thielicke, Helmut, 1908- Descartes, Rene, 1596-1650 Word of God (Christian theology) Holy Spirit Faith Salvation Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 1996. Instead of speaking of modem and conservative theology. Thielicke prefers to refer to it as the Cartesian and non-Cartesian structure of theological thought. Descartes with his statement Cogito, ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) initiated all the movements which find their point of departure in the "I" as the subject of experience and understanding. He so paved the way for making the relevance of the knowing self the centre of thought. The study starts with Thielicke's sketch of Cartesian theology and its essential problems. He denotes that the theology is marked by a concentration on the act of understanding and appropriation. Thielicke wants to give an answer to all the problems raised by the Cartesian theology as he takes his theological starting-point in the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He is convinced that it is, for its part, a protest against the Cartesian approach in theology, because the testimony of the holy Spirit is a protest against our won endeavour, preparation, thought, or work. The work of the Holy spirit is to make the salvation history contemporary to us. Thielicke notes that God's Word (through the Holy Spirit) creates its own hearer. Between the old man and this Word there is no bridge or continuity.
